What is the impact of medical marijuana on PTSD?
It is becoming increasingly usual for persons with PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder; formerly known as PTSS) to use medical marijuana as a form of treatment (Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome). In spite of the lack of evidence, PTSD patients report that medicinal cannabis has helped them significantly, especially with anxiety and sleep disturbances.
The endocannabinoid system is involved in not one, but two of the most crucial PTSS variables: memory formation and stress response. Extinction learning occurs when the CB1 receptor in the brain is activated. That new memories can potentially replace old ones is demonstrated here. Cannabis can mask the anxious feelings that arise from remembering traumatic events.
